Drivers and emergency responders were dealing with problems with snow and ice on area interstates Jan. 2.

North and East Knox County, including interstates, along with Scott, Campbell, Morgan, Union and Claiborne counties reported snowy and icy roads.

TDOT had all road crews working to clear interstate routes. Parts of I-640, particularly on the east side, were partially covered in snow.

Northbound I-75 near Emory Road was shut down due to a crash but later reopened.

911 dispatchers in Knox County reported numerous crashes on interstates and secondary roads.

Western and southern portions of the county were far less affected by the weather, with no snow on I-40 in West Knoxville.

Dispatchers in Claiborne County reported slick roads but salt trucks were improving them. Highways and secondary roads were icy in Fentress County.

Dispatchers in Morgan County said conditions were similar there and encouraged drivers to stay home.

Meanwhile, snow showers continued the morning of Jan. 3, causing slick roads on the northern Cumberland Plateau and much of East Tennessee.

TDOT reported patches of snow and ice on major routes from near Cookeville across the plateau and through the Knoxville area.

The National Weather Service said drier air was moving in and clouds were expected to break.

The very cold air still contained enough moisture that snow was expected to continue into midday in the mountains of East Tennessee.

There were no major interstate highway incidents reported, but several counties had cancelled school.
